My first personal experience by Gardener 68
November 4th 2005.
Barry, Georgia and myself took on the challenge of growing our own Fruit and
Vegetables.
All three of us were very excited, we wanted to get to work immediately ,
with new wellies for us all we started work. cutting down hedges, cleaning
out the sheds and working our way through our new overgrown plot. within a few
weeks the plot was cleared and we were waiting to sow seeds, but we still had
Months before we could start. So we decided to get a poly tunnel. with the help
of my Dad we set to work putting up the frame, then waiting for a dry day to
complete the tunnel with the plastic.
Christmas soon passed and shops began to fill up with seeds, compost, pots
etc. We had nearly one of everything. We started sowing seeds and then waited
and waited for the first seedlings to appear, much to Georgia's delight she
could water something other than weeds. Then the time for planting out and
weeding came and at last our allotment was fully planted.
Summer holidays came and Georgia and myself spent the six weeks, weeding,
digging, watering and caring for our plants. At last we tasted our first
strawberry followed by tomatoes, peas, potatoes, carrots, beans and pumpkins
ready for Halloween and all the flowers we had grown for home.
Georgia soon wanted her own garden so Barry set to work building her a garden
with the help of my design. She planted peas, peppers and sowed some carrots at
the end of Summer, but to her despair and upset the carrots had been washed away
by the rain, which she still can't understand and is still asking "where
are my carrots".
Now all our crops are gone, the beds are once again being prepared for next
year, so out comes the pencil and pad to plan for next year on what goes where.
I have already started by planting all the spring bulbs into beds of different
shapes and sizes and can't wait for Spring to see how wonderful they all look.
